PENERIMAAN PROGRAM PEMBANGUNAN DIRI DALAM KALANGAN PENDUDUK RUMAH PANJANG DI SARAWAK (THE ACCEPTANCE OF SELF-DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES AMONGST THE INHABITANTS OF THE SARAWAK LONGHOUSES)
Abstract

ABSTRACT
This research is conducted to investigate on the acceptance of the self-development programs conducted by the Peoples Welfare Development Scheme for the inhabitants of the longhouses in the Song district of Sarawak. The inhabitants’ acceptance on the program is investigated specifically based on four programs that characterize self-development. These programs include Skills and Career Training Program, Education Excellence Program, Human Intellectual Development Program as well as Income Development Program. Based on a random selection, 260 heads of families were identified to be respondents of the study. Questionnaires and structured interviews were deployed for the collection of data which was further analyzed using the SPSS program. Findings indicate that a majority of the longhouse inhabitants who were interviewed are not involved in the Self-development program. Therefore, this study suggests that further efforts are taken to provide opportunities for the inhabitants to be included in the implementation of such self-development programs, hence ensuring that the efforts to eradicate poverty are achieved.
