Abstract

Abstract
This research aims to identify the effect of organizational communication on the job satisfaction of the support staff in Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka. The aspects of communication identified in this research include patterns of communication practiced in organizations, frequency of use, the pattern of communication utilized to receive and provide directives and information, the communication skills of employees as well as the patterns of communication that provide job satisfaction. A total of 94 respondents from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka were selected randomly as samples, out of which 54 were males and 40 were females. Questionnaires were used for the purpose of collecting data. Research findings indicate that the type of oral communication that is most widely used in the organization includes interpersonal communication (62%). It has been found that the type of communication does not influence the frequency of use. Written communication, which is used for the purpose of delivering information or directives on work matters is most often done via notices (44.7%), memo (52.6%), dialogue (38.3%) and report (43.6%). It is evident that 69% of the respondents are in need of communication skills but only 84% of them have attended skills development courses. Written communication has been found to provide job satisfaction for these respondents. On the overall, it is clear that the type of communication practiced in an organization influences the job satisfaction of support staff. Since job satisfaction influences their performance, it is suggested that more research on the effects of communication on job satisfaction of support staff are conducted.
